3D Laser Scanning

A FARO 3D laser scanning device emits laser beams that are reflected of the surface of an object. During a laser scan, the scanner translates the laser beams that are reflected back to the scanner into point cloud data. A laser scan analyzes the shape and surface of an object, and through reconstruction, calculates an accurate virtual 3D model of the object.

The makers of movies and video games use 3D laser scanning technology and 3D computer graphics to bring computer animations of real world elements, or digital models of dinosaurs, to life. Architecture, too, profits from the use of an accurate 3D laser scanning system, which allows visualisation of building plans in 3D.

Tunnel construction and plant construction and layout are made easier when based on a precise 3D laser scan of existing structures, and many other fields of industry use a portable FARO 3D Photon Laser Scanner for 3D inspection of machinery and products. Reverse engineering, the reconstruction of real conditions based on scan data, is extensively applied in accident research.
