Reverse Engineering

Reverse engineering, the virtualisation of reality, is a prerequisite for the construction of any 3D model that is to be used as a CAD model. In order to make the modeling of reality in virtuality possible, a laser scan must first gather the necessary 3D data, which are translated into a 3D model.

Digitization by software such as the CAM2 Software turns the 3D model into a CAD model, that allows alterations to any existing structure to be viewed in advance on the virtual model. Reverse engineering has been applied to everything from shipbuilding to football stadiums, crime scenes and satellite manufacturing and is without doubt the most flexible area of application for laser scanning technology – but can also be carried out with contact measurement systems.

FARO has created highly adaptable laser scanning devices like the portable Laser ScanArm and the Photon Laser Scanner, which can digitize objects as large as an entire production plant.
